You have to activate the trial version to bring it out of reduced
functionality mode.

If you've already activated it and the trial has expired (30 days, I
believe), then you have to buy the product.

Ed, does that mean any documents created in this trial version are totally
locked unless i buy the program? if so, that should have been noted BEFORE
offering the free download, or at least somewhere in the instructions...like
many others, i've got hours of work on newsletters and other pubs that are
just trash! That was really kind of sneaky....unfortunately, the program is
so expensive for us itty bitty rural town clerks to buy that while waiting
for council approval of the purchase, the trial seemed like a good
idea....evidentally not so much. I need the documents I worked on
NOW.....and I can see 'em, but that's about it...not fair of MS...

As I asked in the ohter newsgroup - what did you think would happen when the
trial expired? Your documents are not locked - the program is. And the
program isn't all THAT expensive. It's $149 thru Amazon.com. I would think
that your town's treasurer could spring for that amount without having to go
thru a lot of hassle (assuming you are doing town clerk work with the
program). Just put it under general business expenses.

Not if you have another program that can open them. (i.e. Publisher 2002
or 2003)

The TRIAL is exactly that - a TRIAL. It says in numerous places that it
is for EVALUATION purposes, not for production work, and that it is
valid for 30 days. (Reading the website, it seems it's now 60 days.)

You cannot seriously expect Microsoft to give you a $100+ application
for free in perpetuity?

Going through the hoops to download the trial, the very first page I
reach says:

"Download your choice of suites or programs from the 2007 Microsoft
Office release from the Internet. Trial programs contain the same
functionality that you get when you buy the perpetual versions — ***but
only for a limited time***."
(emphasis added)
