Downloading add ins, plug ins, and featured updates?? HELP!!

I have currently have Microsoft Office 2003 installed. I do run Microsoft
Update, and it says my computer is "up to date" When browsing through
Microsoft Downloads; I see download options for Add ins, updates, and plug
ins, to my office applications. Some of them look like they could benefit
me. BUT my questions are:
WHAT CAN I INSTALL?
WHAT DO I ALREADY HAVE INSTALLED?
AND HOW DO I KNOW IF A PARTICULAR ADD IN (or such) IS ALREADY
WORKING WITH MY OFFICE SYSTEM?
Since my system is working fine, I DON'T want to do anything that would
screw it up! Or make my programs, documents, and applications I already use
unavailable!
ALSO; I am starting my own business, so many of the downloads I see,
look like features I either need or could benefit me! I also do not know
much about using each of the programs with office. I'm learning as I go! I
have tried to use the programs to accomplish tasks, and it seems like I am
either making a simple task VERY difficult, or the program cannot create
applications specified to my needs? (Simple customer management databases,
etc...)
So I do know how or if I can already do/have what the download
description states? or if I install the download, I will then be able to
accomplish these things? and more?

Please HELP?? Anything anyone has to offer would be most wonderfully
appreciated!!!! Thank you so much!
