Downloading blocked pictures in e-mail

M

Michael Smith

Hi,

I'm using Outlook 2003. After opening an e-mail and clicking the banner to
download embedded pictures, the pictures are updated in the preview pane but
not in the open e-mail. If I then close the e-mail, saving changes and then
re-open it, the pictures will appear in the e-mail.

Has anyone ever experience this issue? Any resolution suggestions would be
appreciated. It is a pain to have to close and re-open an e-mail to view the
full contents.

Thanks for your help,
Michael

When you choose in the Reading Pane to download the images and change
selection between e-mails the change will be automatically saved. When you
open the message later it will will display the pictures.

Hi Roady,

Thanks for your help. I am able, using the reading pane, to download the
pictures and when I open the e-mail, the pictures are still present.

I just reinstalled my system and I am sure that on my old system, same
software, I was able to download the pictures in the open e-mail and they
would update in both the reading pane and the e-mail. Is that not correct
operation?

If I close the reading pane, the pictures will update correctly when
downloading from within open e-mails. It is only when the reading pane and
the e-mail are both open, that the update is performed only in the reading
pane. Is there something that I can try to do to resolve this behaviour. I
know on my home system it doesn't behave this way.

Thansk for your help,
Michael

Hi Roady,

My build number is 11.8010.8036 SP2. I get the same result in safe mode:
when the reading pane is open, only the reading pane is updated, when the
reading pane is closed, the e-mail is updated.

Thanks for your help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Let me make sure that I get this right;
You receive a message with blocked pictures and are looking at it via the
Reading Pane. You open the message and in the opened message you use the
information bar to display the blocked pictures. Now the blocked pictures do
show in the Reading Pane but still not in the opened e-mail? What shows
there now then?

That is exactly right. The reading pane shows the pictures, but the e-mail

changes, and if I choose save and then re-open the e-mail, the pictures are
displayed in the e-mail.

Thanks,

Hi,

That is exactly what happens on my system. No solution yet. I'm surprised
that this isn't affecting more people with IE7 and Outlook.

Michael

S

SharonF

I gave up and went back to IE6, which fixed this problem as well as a problem
I was having with my form helper utility (Gator).

N

Nate B

I also experienced this problem after installing IE7. Turns out that
when I installed IE7, it reconfigured my LAN settings to try to use a
proxy server (IE7>Tools>Internet Options>Connections>LAN settings>Proxy
server). Since we don't have a proxy server in my company's LAN, IE7
was unable to connect to the Internet - I couldn't even visit
www.google.com from within IE7 (I normally use Firefox).

I believe that Outlook relies upon the same Internet connection
settings, hence it was unable to retrieve any images embedded within
HTML email. Once I unchecked the option to use a proxy server, IE7 was
able to browse public websites and Outlook started downloading images.

So, at least in my case, the problem was not related to the security
features/settings within Outlook to block image downloads.

Hope this is of some help to someone!
- Nate

O

Ohboy

I have the same problem. Unfortunately, Nate's fix didn't work for me. My
LAN wasn't set to use a proxy. The only change I made was to check auto
config, but that didn't help either.

Interestingly the problem described in this thread doesn't happen on all
emails. I haven't been able to figure out any consistency to when it occurs.

Thanks to Michael for describing the problem so clearly. Now if only
someone could come up with a fix. It's not an earth shattering problem, but
certainly enough of an annoyance to make me consider changing my email
client.
