Downloading FTP

I do know the FTP server is up and running so that isn't the problem. The
error message I get when I try to download the FTP site is that it can't be
found on port 21 or my proxy settings are wrong. I'm a novice and have no
idea how to set up the port or the proxy settings. There is nothing in the
Front Page 2003 manual about this that I can find.

What steps are you taking to download the site? Start from Open
FrontPage.. and mention all menu or toolbar items used.

To download a site via FTP, requires the use of the a 3rd Party FTP application (such as WS_FTP).
You would download the entire site to a folder on your HD, then you would open this folder in FP,
and allow FP to make it a site, then after you have modified the site content, you may be able to
use FP's FTP to upload, otherwise you will have to use the 3rd Party FTP application/

File
Open Site
Open existing folder of downloaded website from prior session
Remote Web Site
Logon and password
then it seems to begin downloading by stating "Listing subsites"
After a long time, I get the following error
"Could not find a Web server at (website) on port 21. Please check to make
sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set
correctly."

What I don't understand is why I have been able to get on the FTP website in
the past (about 3 weeks ago), but over the last few days have not been able
to connect. I have made no changes to my computer in this time.

Thanks

That is the method I use for FTP sites.

Check your Firewall settings (FrontPage should be allowed) - these are
probably OK since the remote site view gives Login dialogue.

Toggle the Use Passive FTP checkbox - Click Remote Website Properties,
and on Remote Web site tab either tick the box if it's clear, or clear
the box if it's already ticked.

Try connecting with a different FTP client - Internet Explorer is good
if you don't have a "real" client such as Ws-FTP. In the IE address
bar use the same address as you do in FrontPage. If this fails you need
to speak with your host.

Ask your host if anything has changed in the last 3 weeks regarding the
FTP server.

I have found over the years that there are some FTP servers that
FrontPage has problems with - sometimes it works, sometimes it fails
completely. FrontPage requires an almost perfect, continuous connection
or it will fail. Most other FTP clients will automatically reconnect on
a "dodgy" connection.
