Downloading MS Updates

E

Edward O'Brien

I have tried to download a MS update for Media Player 9 but was asked to
close Media Player, disable the Media Player Toolbar and close all other
programmes.

No problems with the first two, and I am not too worried about closing the
Virus Scanner, but shutting down the Firewall (Zonealarm) while this
download/installation completes makes me very nervous. Zonelarm blocks three
or four attacks a minute!

Any advice will be appreciated.

TIA

Closing all programs (except Windows Explorer, and maybe Systray) is
normally adviseable when *installing* a program after download, but
the actual downloading has always been no problem here with ZA & AVG
running - and that includes downloads from MS.

If you're saying that this MP9 wotsit *won't* download unless you
close everything, I wouldn't worry too much about the "attacks" you
mention. Sure - I wouldn't want to be on-line for very long without ZA
running, but most of those "attacks" are just someone scanning ports -
in the short term you're not likely to be individually targeted.

Let us know how it goes...
