Downloading old messages in a new pst file

I received an error message that my pst file has become full. All my new mail
remained on the server and and clicking Send.Receive did not result in any
mail downloads. I created a new pst folder with a new name but only e-mail
received after the time and date of that file having been created are
downloaded.

How do I download older e-mails. Is there a way to decide the date from
which to download?

My approach to this would be to create a new mail profile (using the Mail
applet in Control Panel) and a new PST for that profile (if you're using a POP
account). By creating a new mail profile, you delete all of the information
Outlook keeps about what messages it has downloaded. When you start Outlook
again after creating the new mail profile, Outlook will see all the messages
in the Inbox on the server as new and will download them all again. You can
then open the old PST and copy the contents of the Contacts and Calendar (and
Tasks and Notes, if you use them) to the corresponding folders in the new PST,
thereby losing nothing.

An issue you may encounter again is a PST that is too large. If you are using
Outlook 2002 or earlier, if downloading all the messages the first time
resulted in a PST that exceeded the 2GB limit, the same thing may happen
again. If you're using Outlook 2003 or 2007, then you must still be using the
old format PST and by using a new mail profile and new PST, you'll eliminate
the 2GB size limit and shouldn't encounter the problem again.
