Downloading templates XP

When I go to the MS site for templates, find one and click to download it,
my MSWord 2002 (OfficeXP) opens and a screen comes up asking what 'code' I
want to use. No matter which I try from Windows default to Arabic the result
is computer code on a blank document page. Should it not open as .dot file
to work on to save as a template or should it not just go into my templates
OR at east do something useful? I have no trouble with cliparts.
I am in Windows XP Home, With Office XP including Word 2002. Advice please.

Here is how Word Templates work in Windows 2000 and XP too I suspect. The Word templates that YOU can install (not from the Office CD) ALWAYS go in C:\Documents and Settings\%profile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

So go to the Microsoft site for your templates. They open in Word. This is not necessary but that's the defaullt install. Can change this if you want. Moving on...when the template loads in Word go to the above folder location and Save as a Word Template and give it a name.

The next time you open Word the template you just saved will be under the General tab when you choose File | New | General Templates from the task pane.
