Dozens of "mail merge" lines in TOOLS dropsown

When I click TOOLS in Word 2000, I have dozens of lines
that say "Mail Merge" with no other explanation. Word has
become quite slow, and often crashes. Could this be the
reason, what does this mean, and what can I do to correct
this?

This is probably a problem to do with a Works Add-in. There is more info at

WD2000: Works 2000 Adds Functionality to Word 2000:

You may also have togo into Word Tools|Customize and drag all the unwanted
menu options off the menu.

At least one person has reported that they were only finally able to solve
this problem by finding and renaming their old Word Normal.dot template and
letting Word create a new one.

Thank you, Peter!! I renamed normal.dot, and, sure
enough, those dozens of lines have disappeared.

Thanks. Renaming Normal to Normal.dot worked for me also
(that is to remove multiple "mail merge" selections in the
tools drop down). I found many files name normal, but the
one that had to be changed was actually located
at "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates"
