drafts always deleted

I am losing all my draft emails. Whenever I save a draft and then close the
message, it goes straight to the deleted items folder.

I have switched draft editors to Word and back, no change.

Any other ideas? I am becoming a bad correspondent when I am not very
careful to retrieve deleted drafts.
