Drag and drop images

I just bought an iBook and and the stundent version of office 2004. In
word when i insert an image I can't drag and drop the image to where I
want it. I drag the transparent version of the image and then it snaps
back.......?I can drag and drop WORD Art anywhere I want but not
images. I may be an idiot because this is my first mac and I'm traeting
it like a PC or something. Also I don't have any previews of templates
in the styles area under THEMES. Could some of these problems be that I
installed the full version over the trail version. Its just frustrating.

You just aren't doing it quite right.... :) as I know because I just had
the same difficulty the other day and had to figure out what I was doing
wrong.

The image needs to be floating, rather than inline with text. I vaguely
think the shift to make inline the default was a change in recent versions
of Word, rather than a Mac vs. Win thing, but not totally sure. Inline
objects can still be dragged around, but only as if they were text.

When you insert an image from a file, somewhere in the dialog to browse for
the file should be a checkbox "treat picture layers as separate objects".
Check it.

For after the fact and for ClipArt, bring up the Format Picture dialog,
click on the Layout tab, and set the image to anything but inline. You will
notice that the markers telling you the image is selected are different for
inline and floating graphics.

WordArt is inserted floating by default. I don't know whether it's possible
to change the default settings for other insertions--didn't see anything in
a quick check of Preferences.
Also I don't have any previews of templates
in the styles area under THEMES.
Don't even know what you are talking about, here. :) Repost a separate
question with more detail?

And use Google groups to search microsoft.public.mac.office.* for what you
need to do about installing the full over the trial.

Hey garyh-

Daiya is right on target with the advice, and this IS a fairly recent
change in how Word inserts images (both Mac & PC versions). Can't give
you any technical reason for the change, but that's what MS did.

As for your Themes... The recommendation from MS is to remove any trial
versions before installing 2004. A small note in the install guide,
but there. That may be the problem if the install recognized that
Themes were there, but the "Live" version can't access them.
Regardless, there could be other problems that arise, so my humble
suggestion is that you remove the trial version and reinstall Office
2004. When you do, make sure to accept a complete installation so
everything will be included.

Also, since you're apparently running OSX, don't forget to use Disk
Utility to repair permissions after you reinstall.

Good Luck!

PS: Instead of the Format Picture dialog box, you can also access most
of the "Wrapping" features from the Picture Toolbar.

Or, in Word04, from the Wrapping pane of the Formatting Palette. I've
disabled my Picture Toolbar in 04...
