Drag / Drop not working in MS word

Dear all

I am having a hell of a time with dragging and dropping an MS word document
into another word document. I was initially able to do this successfully
however lately this is not possible. When I drop a file into a fresh
document, the content of the file gets pasted in rather than an OLE -
attachment. I can go to tools and insert object manually and then display the
object as an icon, however it was much easier just dragging and dropping.
When I use the right click and drag into new cocument, i get the option to
copy or move, however the content is pasted and not the object as an icon.
I have searched everywhere for reg hacks and settings but come no no
success. Can anyone help.

Kind regards

Musa

Hi =?Utf-8?B?TXVzYQ==?=,

The only time I've ever seen Word generate an embedded document as an icon is
when dragging a document icon from an Outlook email message to a document. Then
I always get an embedded object, represented by an icon. From where are you
dragging the file?

Word certainly has no Tools command for inserting things, either, so I don't
know to what you're referring, here. Do you mean Insert/Object?

Which version of Word are we dealing with?

Hi Cindy

I'll try to explain the scenario . As you probably know, you can go to
Insert> Object> Create from File > choose MS Word file and check "Display as
Icon". The file will then be inserted as an object within the document and
displayed as an icon.

Now previously I was able to open a word document and select another object
ie another document from desktop and drag straight into the original
document. This will then act as an inserted object but displayed
automatically as an Icon.

However due to some updates or changes, when I drag a document, it pastes
the content of the document I drag accross rather than display as an icon. I
hope this makes more sense.

If I left click select a document and drag -drop an object into MS word, it
gives me the option of "move here" or "copy here".Both options i select
pastes the document in place.

I have tried this in both Office 2000 XP and 2003.

Can you please help

Thanks

Musa

Yes, it's clear now. And FWIW I see the same in Word 2003. This may have been a
change users requested over a long period of time; just a guess.

How about this: If I copy such an icon, I can use Edit/Paste Special in Word to
paste the format "Files" and activate "Link". Which isn't fast enough for you,
I know, but recording the paste actions in a macro works, so perhaps you can
copy the icon on the desktop, move back to Word and run the macro (from a
toolbar or keyboard shortcut):

Sub PasteFileAsIcon()
Selection.PasteSpecial Link:=False, _
DataType:=21, Placement:=wdInLine, _
DisplayAsIcon:=True, IconIndex:=1, _
IconLabel:="Microsoft Word Document"
End Sub
