Drag & Drop

First let's make sure we're using the same terms (to
reduce confusion). The tab thingies across the top of
the screen are either sections or folders (depending on
the underlying file type of that object) and the tab
thingies along the left or right side of the screen are
pages.

Having said that: drag and drop isn't completely
utilized in the product but pages, sections and folders
can all be moved to anywhere else in your OneNote
notebook hierarchy. You can click on any tab (on the top
or side) and select "Move" from the context menu. You
will then get a dialog box which allows you to select the
desitnation location.

Just to clarify.....

I mean to drag an item from the current page and drop it on to another
page (i.e. to select an item and drag it onto the page tab of a new page
on the right of the screen).

I appreciate you can use copy/cut on the current page and then paste on
the new page, but dragging and dropping seems so much easier and with
drag & drop being such a basic in Windows prograqms, I was just
surprised that I wasn't able to do it

Hope that makes it clearer, but thanks for your response....

Martin,

To the best of my knowledge there is no drag and drop functionality in
OneNote version 1.0 (other than dragging from a Web browser into
OneNote, if you are not familiar with that then just ask). It would
certainly be nice to have drag and drop internally in OneNote.

However, there is a little trick that can be useful if you want to
MOVE a page (or group of pages) from one section to another. It
becomes more useful as your OneNote collection grows.

It's easiest to demonstrate as a step-by-step.

1. Create a section "Current"
2. In Current create three pages Page1, Page2 and Page3
3. Create a section "Archive" but don't create any pages
4. In Current right click on the page tab for Page 1
5. Choose the Move Page To option
6. Click on Another Section (which is the only option the first time
you do this)
7. Navigate to the Archive section and click Move to move the page or
click Copy to copy the page.

The page Page1 is moved to the Archive section.
[So far, so boring.]

8. Go back to Current and click on Page 2, press Ctrl and click on
Page 3
9. Right click
10. Select Move Page To option

Now Archive is shown at the top of the options. Simply click on it to
MOVE the two selected pages to the Archive section.

Page2 and Page3 are moved to Archive.

Unfortunately with the highlighted/prioritised section options only
MOVE works, as far as I am aware. To copy the page you have to
navigate through the whole hierarchy again.

Now you have the Archive section shown on top. So you can move a page
or group of pages to sections which you access frequently without
navigating through the whole hierarchy of folders and sections.

I find it useful. Perhaps you will too.

You can drag/drop pages within a section. click on the page tab to select
it, and drag it left or right enough to get it out of the stack, then up or
down (you'll see a little triangle indicating where it will drop)
