Drawing a Line above Text

I want to draw a line above the address I have placed in a footer to
separate the address from the body of my letter.

I tried used - Format/Borders & Shading - then selected the border's tab
and applied my selections to Text - but when I do this no mater what box I
choose top/sides/bottom I always get a box around my text which I don't
want. If I apply to Paragraph it works but the line extends beyond the
text to the width of the paragraph - which I don't want.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated:)

When I wanted this I used the Draw/Line tool to draw a line in the footer
then used the up arrow key to position it just above my footer text . (I use
Word 2002)

The problem with drawing lines is that, while they can be positioned
relative to text, they are not as firmly attached to it as borders.
