drawing canvas

In Word 2003 when I click on the line drawing tool it automatically opens a
drawing canvas that says "Create your drawing here." How do
I get it so that the box does not to open up?

I have tried turning it off in "tools" "options" etc. which works
temporarily but the next time I fire up "Word" and try to draw a line the
damn box has somehow reset itself and appears again!

How can I PERMANENTLY remove it?

(I have a similar problem with reading layout which resets itself every time
I turn it off)

If your Options settings are not being saved, it may be that the Word Data
key in the Registry is damaged; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm

If rebuilding the Registry key doesn't help, it may be that a poorly written
add-in is changing the settings.
