Word certainly isn't necessary and it is a longer way around, however,
I've
found that many people who use Visio started their drawings in a program
like
Word by using the Drawing toolbar. As such, many of these drawings are
already contained in a Word document. Since the question was posted in a
Word
forum, I simply assumed that was the case here.
As such, the instructions were meant to assist in getting the information
out of Word and into Visio.

Talk about doing it the long way around. Why use Word at all?

You could draw the individual symbols in Word, then copy and paste them
into
a Visio file. Once there, you'll want to switch your stencil to Edit
mode,
then just drag and drop the copied symbol from the drawing page onto
the
stencil. Save the stencil, switch it back to Read-Only and you have
your
new
master shape.
