drawing embedded objects for the first time is slow

I have a document that is extremely slow to display embedded objects (images and equations) for the first time after loading the document. It takes up to a minute before the objects appear. Once they are "loaded", resizing the page or going back to the image is not a problem. I am running a 1.7 GHz P4. What the @#$ is going on?

See my response to a nearby post on drawings jumping all
over.

Equations will corrupt a document sooner or later. I
develop them in another file and bring them over as
pictures. Ctl-Shift-F9 does it in place and inline.
