drawing tool bar arrows and lines grayed not able to select

I am trying to add solid lines and different arrows to highligh areas and
pinpoint locations. The drawing tool bar shows the icons for these however
when I select one of these and some others they are grayed and not able to
select. How do I fix this problem

If you are referring to the buttons toward the right end of the toolbar whose
tip boxes include the word 'style', they are for *changing* the style of an
*existing* line or arrow. The tools for creating the lines/arrows are toward
the left end of the bar. Their tip boxes simply display teh words 'Line' &
'Arrow', respectively. You will find others available in the Autoshapes.
