Drop Cap issue

I'm using Student / Teachers Editon of MS Word 2004 for Mac - running
OS 10.3.8 on a iMac G5.

I'm trying to use the "Drop Cap" function in a Word Doc - but it is
inactive - grayed out. I have tried this both using the entire page
(no text box) and withing a text box, but it still doesn't activate.

I have deleted and reinstalled Mac Office 2004 per MS tech support,
downloaded and installed Service Pak 1 (11.1) and the more recent
11.1.1

I'm trying to reporoduce a doc similar to the examle "Report" in the
Word Docs template. It has a Drop Cap on Page 2 or 3 (I forget
exactl;y which one..) but for the life of me, I can't reproduce this
feature.

I find that it is grayed out if you don't have any text selected before you
invoke it--that isn't it, is it?

Otherwise, works fine in Word 2004 for me here. The student/teacher edition
is not any different from the regular.

Hi Mike-

One point I would offer is that you cannot apply Drop Caps in a Text Box. (I
know of a workaround, but it won't give acceptable results in many cases.)

Second, don't select (highlight) any text, just place your insertion in a
regular text paragraph and the Drop Cap command should be active. Is this
not the case on your system?

Ah, right--it's greyed out in empty paragraphs, but text doesn't have to be
selected. My bad.
