Drop Cap Word 2007

I finally found the Drop Cap in Word 2007 under Insert. However, my option
is disabled or grayed out. Same as it show in the help feature. What am I
doing wrong?

You have to add text to the paragraph *before* creating a drop cap.

Specifically, you have to have text selected.

Yes, I'm sorry that seems so basic I didn't mention it.

I have typed in text into the paragraph and have selected the first
character. Yet the Drop Cap is still disabled/grayed out.

You cannot do Drop Caps inside a Table

Hmm... For me it is sufficient to have the insertion point in a paragraph
that contains text.

If that were the case, how would Format | Drop Cap know what to format? Does
it just do the first letter by default? Because you can include more than
one letter if you have the text selected.

With nothing selected, it formats the first letter only, yes.
