drop down and check boxes in non-protected document

Hi.
I have a table in MS Word with 10 rows, 2 columns. The one column contains
a letter and the column to the right of it contains an embedded table with
some form fields and check boxes to verify the status of the letter. I want
the letter to be editabe, but to be able to use the check boxes.

If I close the form, so the dropdowns and checkboxes work, I can't make
changes to the text of the letter. Is there a way to unprotect part of the
document or do you have any other suggestions?
