drop down list not appearing

I'm using excel 2000 and have added data validation to a
number of cells, the "valid data" being a list - i have
ticked the relevant "display in cell dropdown" box, but
the drop down list does not appear when i click on the
relevant cells.

I have a similar spreadsheet where it does work (ie the
drop down appears)so this would appear to be a software
quirk?

Anyone have any ideas?

(the only thing i can find in the knowledge database is
unfreeze panes with excel 97, clearly not relevant here)

Are the objects visible? Choose Tools>Options, and on the View tab,
under Objects, select Show all or Show placeholders.

thanks, checked that - "show all" already selected. any
other ideas?
