drop down menu delay

When I am in word, I hit control-o to open a file. The
dialogue box comes up. But when I hit the drop down menu
or double click on a folder to navigate to a specific
place to open a file, the system hangs and I get the
hourglass sign for up to 30 seconds. This also happens
when I go to "save as" and try to navigate to a different
folder. The hard drive is not furiously running when this
happens - the system seems to just be sitting there.

Any idea what this is or what a fix for it might be?

I'm also experiencing this annoyance. I thought it was because my computer
was 2 or 3 years old and had a lot of clutter, but I just got a new 2.8ghz P4
with a gig of ram with a fresh install of Windows XP and Office XP and I
still notice the hang. Its not 30 seconds for me, more like 5-10.

If you have an unavailable drive in the drop down list then that can
cause the delay you describe.
