Drop Down Menus and Text Boxes

I'm working in Word X, version 10.1.6.

I'm trying to create a Word template that uses both drop down menus and
text boxes. The only way I can seem to get the drop down menus to work
is to protect (lock) the form. That's not a problem, except that when I
do protect the form, it prevents me from accessing the text boxes I
created.

Is there a way to use both text boxes and pull down menus in one Word
document or template?

I appreciate your help.

Are you really using Text Boxes? (as in Insert | Text Box) I think if you
are making forms, then the Forms toolbar (or some other feature) should
offer fill-in fields that you would use instead of text boxes, assuming that
what you want is a blank box, e.g., where people can type their name.

The fill-in fields should still be active after protection, because Word
will recognize them as a space that the form filler is supposed to use, not
part of the form itself.

I don't make forms myself, but Word's terminology seems to be "form fields",
and this Help topic might be useful: "Insert fields in forms", it gives
directions for what I *think* you must want. (that's from Word 2004, not
sure if there were changes from Word X to forms)

Others who have experience with forms should be coming along, so be sure to
post back if using Word's form fields instead of text boxes doesn't help.
