Drop-down menus disappeared

Beth,
Sorry. I'm in OS vers. 9 using Office 2001 for Mac. I don't know
what I did, or what else could have happened, but I cannot get the
drop-down menus to appear. Any suggestions?

I seem to have the similar problem. Although I've reinstalled Word
(Mac, 2001), as well as updated it with the latest Service pack
(downloaded at Mactopia), the menus are still inaccessible. I've
visited the link above, tried what i could, to no avail, and some of
the advice mainly include 'go to...' and then 'go down' that and that
menu to find certain feature. Problem is, since i can't get the menus
down, i can't follow those instructions either. This is truly
annoying. Did you solve it, Glenn?

That's really not the case at all, unless your menus aren't available in any
program, not just Word. Did you try all the suggestions in the article? It
addresses 4 separate situations, only 2 minor remedies involve using Word's
toolbars, and clearly if you can't do it, that advice doesn't apply to you.
Be sure to read to the bottom of the page.

Did renaming Normal and/or the Word Settings file not work?

When you reinstalled and updated (with the Combined Office Updater,
correct?), did you reboot with extensions off?

you do a remove and reinstall, since installing Word over an existing copy
keeps your Normal template and Prefs files, and most Word difficulties can
be traced to a corrupt Normal.dot or corrupt Settings file.

The Office 2001 Combined Update 9.0.4, which includes Office 2001
Service Release 1, did not restore Word's drop-down menus. However,
the next suggestion--renaming the Word Settings (9) file and reopening
Word--did work. The drop-down menus reappeared, and I trashed the
old, renamed Settings file and checked preferences. I am curious
about the bug that causes the submenus to disappear. Thank you very
much for the advice on how to fix the problem. I was really
frustrated trying to work without the submenus.
