Dropping connection to Exchange server

Hello fellow mactopists,

I have a new bone for you to chew on:

We use an Exchange 2000 server in our office, and after a lot of trial&error, I managed to connect my Entourage 2008 to it through the internal network (no IMAP, no WOA).

Sending and recieving data works, but with a quirk:
The connection to the exchange server constantly drops and reconnects every few seconds. The connection lasts long enough to fetch and send a few emails at a time, but when trying to update larger data like the public contacts or calendar, it gets stuck in an endless update lop, without actually fetching any data.

Did you hear of this issue before? Any hints what to do? Or do you need more specific information? Anyway, thanks for any advice you can give.

Are you using Kerberos authentication or are you manually entering your
password? If you're using Kerberos then try entering your password manually.

Although you and your Exchange Server are on the same network are you
possibly in a different site from your server?

Can you verify that you are indeed connecting to your back-end Exchange
Server that hosts your E-mail account?

no Kerberos. password and username are entered manually (and double checked by admin).

I'm on the same site as the server, using local network.

Yes, I am accessing through back-end (again, checked by admin)

Entourage is able to connect successfully. It fetches my mails. It just can't load the data from public calendar, it gets stuck in endless updating, and switching frow connected to disconnected every frew seconds

Possibly of interest: even though I saved all the login data in the account settings, with key chain option enabled, Entourage always prompts me for password and domain on startup.

And one more piece of information:

Now when sending or recieving mail, i get an error message: couldn not syncronize with <<exchange server>>

error code: -18498

the mail still gets through eventually
