DST 2007 Questions

Hi all, great info and advice on this website. This is my first post. I am
administering a network with a couple of 2003 servers(no exchange), systems
running windows XP, Outlook 2003, and a couple of people with blackberrys and
treos. I am running very late on the dst updates but need to get it going.
I noticed a couple of workstations had Automatic updates running and it
installed the OS dst update. Ok, then I was thinking well all I have to do
is run the outlook dst update and they should be fine. It turns out
afterwards that some of the appointments in the extended time period were
changed but some weren't. Some still even displayed the wrong time. I have
read MS articles about the DST updates but it's still a little confusing.
What is the proper way you all are running the updates? Will just running
the update on the servers be fine since the workstations take the time from
the server anyway? What is the use of the Outlook update tool? Doesn't
Outlook take the time from the OS clock? Sorry for the long email and
questions. Any advice and help is appreciated. Thanks!!

Do all the os's first - this included the servers, workstations and pdas if
they are not controlled by a satellite signal.

Outlook gets the time from the os - the outlook tzmover tool is to fix
appointments that fall in the affected periods - march 11 to april 1 and
first week of nov.

The desktops take the time from the servers (in GMT format) then adjust it
for their local time based on TZ and DST settings. If the workstations
aren't updated, they will be off an hour because their system thinks DST
starts in 3 weeks.

Thanks for your help. Can you think of a reason why applying the tzmover
tool would have changed the appointment times.(i.e. appointment on March 12
orginally scheduled at 9 a.m., after tzmover tool time changed to 10 a.m.)
and stayed there after the updates thereby not reflecting the changes after
the update. Keep in mind that the windows dst update was applied awhile
before the tzmover update was applied. Anyway to fix this or will the user
need to adjust any appointments that do not have the right time after the
update is applied. Thanks again!

TZmove shouldn't work/be used until after the update is applied for the new
time zone definitions.

Thanks Diane. Another question related to Exchange. Does the outlook update
need to be applied even if the exchange dst update is applied on the
mailboxes?

The exchange version of the tzmover utility? No. You only need to run one or
the other, not both. Basically, the admin has to decide if he wants to do
all of the mailboxes at once or rely on the users to do their own then
choose the tool.
