Due By field vs Reminder Time field

In working with contacts, it looks like when I set a follow up, it
updates both the "Reminder Time" field and the "Due By" field. If I
update the "Due By" field manually, it also updates the "Reminder
time" field. However, if I update the "Reminder time" manually, it
does not update the "Due By" field. Can someone please explain the
differences with these fields.
