duplex printing problem

I have been through the KB and cannot find an answer to my problem.
I am trying to print a 10 (even # of pages) saddle staple booklet compiled
in MS Word 2003. I am trying to print landscape, portrait orientation of
page, 2 pages/sheet. Manual duplex selected. HP 1000 LJ printer. Everything
is correct in PRINT VIEW.
First, page 1 (the cover) is on the wrong side of the page for saddle
staping. The print sequence is 1 & 3, 2 &4, 5 & 7, 6 & 8 then page 9 on one
sheet and page 10 on the backside of the same sheet incorrectly leaving two
blank panels, one beside 9 and one beside 10.
I tried also my HP 7530 printer and also took the file to Kinko's and they
tried it on 2 full duplex copiers and coverted it to Acrobat to try it on
another copier.
Any ideas?

Make your document in multiples of 4 pages.

There is no such thing as a 10-page booklet. Booklets must have pages in
multiples of four. Are you using Word's "book fold" feature? This would set
up your booklet for you automatically. If not, you can do this the way
you're attempting, but the print sequence must be different. What you're
really creating is a 12-page booklet, regardless of how your pages are
numbered, so you must create 12 pages and leave them blank as needed. Each
pair of pages must add up to 13. So, for example, you would print:

12 and 1
2 and 11
10 and 3
4 and 9
8 and 5
6 and 7

To manual duplex, you'll have to print 12 and 1, 10 and 3, and 8 and 5, then
turn over and print 6 and 7, 4 and 9, and 2 and 11.

Clarification:
When I attempt to print I open the (now) 12 page file, select "Manual
Duplex" and let the printer print the 1st side. I stick the sheets back in
and let it print the other side. Per Suzanne, do I have to "reassign" my
pages so it prints 1 then 12 , etc etc. ?
I was under the impression that when you selected "Manual duplex" it
automatically assigned the pages correctly (i.e so the Cover came out on the
front with the binding on the left) from my 1-12 file
I never professed to be the brightest bulb on the Christamas tree.

Are you printing single pages or two pages per sheet? If you're printing
single pages, then you can just print the odd pages, then flip over and
print the even pages in reverse order. I thought you were printing two pages
on each side of a single sheet, since you mentioned saddle stapling. If
you're setting up the imposition yourself, then you have to tell Word to
print 12,1,10,3,8,5, then flip over and print 6,7,4,9,2,11; you type these
numbers into the "Pages" box. But it would be much easier to use the "Book
fold" feature.

I am also having problems printing a 36page, 2 pages per side booklet. I can
print OK on an HP 2200 after selecting duplex printing in properties, but my
final copy will be in colour on a non-duplex printer, so I have to refeed
the paper manually. I have tried selecting Manual duplex, or print on front
and back sides options, but pages are out of sequence AND not printed.

I find it difficult to believe that you have to work out the page sequence
than enter all pages separately every time you want to print. What is the
point of having a "manual duplex" check box? Perhaps this is a bug that has
not been addressed? It is supposed to be an Office package after all!

Any suggestions that enable automatic formating for manual duplexing would
be greatly appreciated.
