duplex printing, sections & page orientation

the3rdParty

I have an hp deskjet 990cxi (comes with duplex unit as standard),
Office 2004 and OS 10.3.9 All updates installed (except for the very
recent office update which was pulled by MS), and HP driver 2.7.1

I have a doc which I want to print 2 sided that has a couple of
sections in landscape orientation, interspersed with sections in
portrait. It appears that Word refuses to print a landscape page on
the back of a portrait page and a section with new page orientation
therefore always starts on the right (in principle an odd numbered
page). When this happens to fit in with the flow of the doc all is OK,
but if the section actually starts on an even page, the doc is a mess
from there on - a blank un-numbered page is thown on the back of the
last page of the previous section and the new section starts with an
even page on the right, the gutter on the wrong side, "outside" page
numbers now on the inside etc etc.

The only work around I have found is to put in hard breaks as necessary
to ensure that new sections are on odd pages (on the right), but what I
really want is to have a landscape page print on the back of a portrait
one, without going the manual route of printing odd pages then even.

Is this behaviour a "feature" of the programme, or am I doing something
wrong? Any help much appreciated.

That's a "Limitation" of the printing mechanism. It's not particular to
Word, or the Mac.

If you change "orientation" Word assumes you will require a new sheet of
paper, and will instruct the printer accordingly.

You have found one way to get around it. Another is to rotate the content
while leaving the page in portrait.

So for example you want a sideways table: Put the table in a text box and
rotate it (or paste it as a picture, float it, and rotate it).

Sorry: This is a word-processor, not a desktop publisher :)

Cheers
