Duplicate email problem

Greg

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel
Email Client: pop

I'm using Entourage 2004 as a pop account. I had no problem for a year, but in the last two months, it suddenly downloads all of the emails that remain on my webserver. This has happened six times in the last two months, four times this week. I have not imported any archives for a year.

I am not changing anything on the server or in Entourage. It only happens with one web server, I have more than one. I have Entourage set to leave messages on the server for 25 days and then delete. The other problem is that the emails are not deleting off the server on the 26th day as they are supposed to. I've closed and opened Entourage and rebooted the computer and it still isn't deleting the webmail properly.

I tried creating a new identity, and the complete download has not happened yet on that test identify and did not happen the last time the full download happened on my main identify. But then again, the test identity wasn't open at the time so wasn't downloading anything until I opened the test identity.

This duplicate download happens all at once, and downloads both emails that appear in my main inbox and those that I've moved to other folders in Entourage.

Does anyone know what is causing this? If it starts, is there any way to stop it?

I would be very interested to hear if anyone has an answer to this problem. I use Entourage 2004 (v11.4.0) on a G5 running 10.4.11 and use it with Exchange 2003.

After we changed to British Summer Time on 30 March, my inbox keeps downloading duplicates when it syncs with Exchange. I tried the 'Remove Duplicate Messages' Applescript, which worked to start with, but I have just got back from lunch and found that my inbox is full of duplicate messages again.

We've been having this happen ever since we did the 11.4.0 update.
I'm at a school with about 135 Intel iMacs and about 95 G4 iMacs or
Minis. Authenticating through Active Directory, and all home
directories are split between 2 G5 Xserves. Mail is run through an
Exchange 2003 server.

Soon after we rolled out the 11.4.0 update certain users were running
into a problem with exceeding the quota (250MB). They were getting
multiple copies of messages, including attachments. Tried rebuilding
the DB, trashing it and setting Entourage up from scratch, but nothing
worked until I brought back 11.3.9.

The odd thing is, this only happened to people who were working on
Intel machines. Most of the G4's are still running 11.4.0 with no
problems, but 11.3.9 has to be run on our Intels to avoid this.

Haven't had the nerve to try 11.4.1.

I reported this behavior myself in a previous post. But I'm on a G5

Hi Greg!

Unfortunately, this is caused more often by something being reset on
your POP server rather than Entourage. Entourage knows that it has
already downloaded messages because the server is presenting them with
unique IDs. However, if the server is reset then those unique IDs can
sometimes get reset. Entourage can do nothing to control this.

If you can convert your POP account to IMAP then you'll have more
control your messages because it synchronizes rather than downloads and
deletes.

Hope this helps!

This has just happened again on my G5 running Entourage 11.4.0 and Mac OS X 10.4.11. I am synching with an Exchange 2003 Server.

Do you have a solution for Exchange accounts?

Hi Maff!

The problem Greg mentioned is only for POP accounts. Exchange accounts
are *suppose* to synchronize.

Rather than add your question to Greg's thread I suggest starting a new
one and ask again. You'll have a better chance of getting your message
seen and Greg will only see responses to his question.

Well, this is typical of a Microsoft reply "It's not my problem, it's someone else's.

I've decided to stop using Entourage and have switched to Thunderbird. I don't have any problem with them.

Entourage has an enormous amount of glitches that are never solved and no one has a solution for. Microsoft just doesn't care about Mac users.

I'll be glad when I have no Microsoft products at all because the only problems I have had that are not routine have been with Microsoft! Good riddance.

Hi Greg!

Assuming you're referring to either of my responses...

I don't work for Microsoft and they don't tell me what to say. I am a
volunteer.

I provided you an idea of what I think is happening, why and how to work
around it. It may or may not be the correct answer for your problem but
I can't see your computer nor troubleshoot your E-mail server. I can
only answer with the best knowledge that I have given the set of facts
you present.

If you don't like or don't agree with something I say then you're more
than welcome to dispute it with facts or provide more information that
leads to a better answer.
