Duplicate Files

I've really spoiled ON. I think I know how I did it and what the problem is
now, but I wonder how to fix it.
I copied the folder holding my files to another location as backup.
Forgetting it was a backup I opened ON by clicking on a file there and made
changes or added data. Then, I think, ON changed the location of its files
to the backup location. Over time I did the same thing again and now ON is
confused about where its files are located and it opens up with duplicate
files in the program, i.e. 2 Personal Notebooks with duplicate files in
each, some up to date and others out of date. The shortcut to ON on my
desktop and on the Start menu don't work and I can only go to "All Programs"
in the Start menu to open ON (or click on a file in "Computer").
Can anyone suggest how to repair this problem? Should I update all files and
then delete the backup folder? Will that restore ON to open up only one set
of files?

ON doesn't open at all due to its confusion about file locations? Unless
you open up the location where ON creates its backups as a Notebook, it
shouldn't display anything from the backups location.

What I would do is make a note of *all* of the locations where you have
files that you want to keep or restore, and all of the locations where ON
may have created backups. Open up ON and Close all of the open Notebooks.

Fix the backup location first (Tools | Options | Save | BackupFolder) and
set that to the location where you want the backups to be sent. It's OK if
that is the same location you had set before.

Then open up each of the other folders that contain the Notebooks you want
to keep. If you do all of this, and then reset some of the special paths
to point to the locations you want (as defined under the "Save", "Outlook
Integration", "Send to OneNote" tabs under Tools | Options) you should be
OK.

Thanks, Erik.
The reason I said ON seemed confused about its file location is because when
I click File/Notebook Properties it shows the path as where I had manually
copied files for backup in a folder I created, not the default backup
location (which still is listed under Save).
When I go to Tools/Options/Save it shows the correct default Notebook
location as C:\Users\Myname\Documents\OneNote Notebooks but that does not
seem to be the file that opens in ON.
Now I have changed the path to the default location. Seems alright now.
The only thing that does not work is to open ON from the Start menu/Recently
used programs where ON is listed but clicking on it does nothing. It doesn't
really matter since I can create different kinds of shortcuts, but it just
seems something is still amiss because of that.
Thanks for your help.
