I notice that I have alot of duplicate fonts in my library in addition to word's
font folder....do I need both? Can I delete the ones in word that are already
in my OS X library font folder?

A font in Word's local folder will be available only to Word (or, most
likely, other MS applications). You can combine them into one folder and
delete the duplicates.

A font in Word's local folder won't be available to *any* application.
The only places a font is available from is /System/Library/Fonts,
/Library/Fonts, ~/Library/Fonts, and the Classic system folder's Fonts
folder. m.

On the other hand, fonts in Microsoft Office X's (or 2004's or 2001's)
Office/Fonts subfolder are used to populate (copy to) the ~/Library/Fonts
folder on First Run, and to repair any gaps under some circumstances (I'm
not quite sure which) on future runs. So if you remove some MS fonts from
~/Library/Fonts and/or /Library/Fonts, they'll likely be back some day.
You'd have to remove them from the Microsoft Office {2004 or X}/Office/Fonts
as well as from ~/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts folders if you do don't
want them to reappear. I'm not sure what exactly provokes a re-stocking (the
splash screen will show "Optimizing fontsŠ") but I have seen it happen.
