duplicate open files

S

Stephen H. Falk

Whenever we try to open files in Excel 97 and Word 97 on
both the 98SE and 2000 operating systems the message
following appears:

File open with same name, do you want to make a copy?

also:

File in use by (person), do you want to make a copy?

There are a couple of other messages like these, the fix
we have is to say no and then it just works.

If anyone has run across this situation, please give me a
clue.

Thanks

Hi Stephen,

How are you opening the files? If you are opening the files outside
the application (other than using File/Open) then it sounds like the
file association needs to be recreated.

To recreate the file associations go to Start/Run and run the
following:

winword /r
excel /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

Hi Stephen,

If these files are located on a network drive then it may be a
permissions issue. When you open a document Word creates a temp file
in the same folder called an Owner file (~filename.doc) which holds
the name of the user currently using the file. Normally this file is
deleted when the file is closed.

However if the user's permissions are not set correctly the temp file
may not be deleted and upon attempting to open the document Word
perceives the document is 'in use'.

You may want to review the privileges needed to run Word. I don't know
what network os you are using but the permissions in this article will
be similar for any nos. Also I couldn't put my hands on a KB article
for Word 97 but the Word 2000 permissions will apply as well:
