duplicate personal folders when trying to move .pst file

I'm migrating to a new PC and cannot seem to crack this problem of duplicate
personal folders in Outlook 2003.
- I've already tried the suggestions I've seen to create a new profile,
-I've de-installed and reinstalled office twice.
- I've also tried opening the old .pst as another data folder, copying
everying over and then removing the old .pst folder and I still end up with
duplicate folders the next time I log into outlook.

Frankly i'm so disgusted at this point I'm close to deleting outlook and
looking for another email package. help!

correctly. We of course have no idea what you've actually done.
You must provide precise steps so we can tell what you are doing wrong.
You must state why you can't close the second PST file.

I created a new profile using the /cleanprofile tag
I then added the old .pst using options --> mail setup tab --> data files
I then went and modified the user account to point mail delivery to the
old.pst
I then removed the new .pst using the options --> mail setup tab --> data
files

looks great until I close outlook and re-open it which leads me right back
to square one.

by the way - is there any way to purge the profiles list - I'm up to about
10 now.

You cannot remove the new PST after you add the old because the new PST is
still the default until after a full restart of Outlook. Perform these
actions from within Outlook, not Mail Setup.
Also, do not create the new profile with a switch and make sure the new
profile has a unique name.

Yes - i realize you cannot remove the new.pst until you restarted outlook. I
left out that step below. Also - the /cleanprofile switch was something that
was recommended on this forum so I thought that was the appropriate way to
get to a new profile.

I'm usinge a pop-server account so how do you create a new profile without
the /cleanprofile switch and without going into the mail setup wizard?
Also - how you re-designate the folder to which mail gets delivered without
going back into the mail setup wizard? That activity is not available through
the
options --> mail setup tab --> data files
