Duplicate .pst's in Outlook 2000

I have read all the posts regarding duplicate .pst's going back to 2005.
Even though they pertain to OL 2003, they have given me clues on how to
resolve my duplcate .pst's problem even though I have not been able to do so.
Outlook freezes up constantly and I have to go into Windows Task Manager to
try to End Task the two Outlooks which are always there and never ever
responding. Outlook freezes the minute I "touch" an email.

~~We have created a new profile [isn't it really called an Account or is
that just OL 2000?] The old one is still there. We chose the new one to be
the default profile.

~~I went to File>Open, I chose the Personal Folders Files option.
~~I chose the .pst.
~~Nothing changes in Outlook--all folders are there in duplicate.
~~I closed Outlook and reopened.
~~The two .pst's are still there.

Sounds like we didn't then (create a new profile). In Help for OL 2000,
typing in profile brings us to the account setup area "create a POP3 email
account."

Internet Mail only. I went to microsoft website, posed this in search:
"duplicate pst files Outlook 2000". I got the following hit regarding Windows
2000 and Outlook 2000, (Marie is running XP). It is suggested to edit the
registry (dangerous ground here). Step through folders, Look for an "001e6700
entry which identifies the path of pst file. If more than one entry exists
for this profile, delete the duplicate(s). Any thoughts here? I don't want to
mess with the registry but will if I have to. This is a nasty problem. The
only other option I can think of is to completely uninstall/re-install
Outlook but I'm unsure if the registry will clear and the problem will return
on re-install. An unistall may destroy Marie's history rich pst file and she
would lose all her contacts, she does genealogic research and has a huge
contact base.

Uninstall, reinstall will do nothing. You can't fix this without a reg hack.
The first question is do you really need to fix it? Rarely is this a "nasty"
problem. It is largely cosmetic.
If you feel you do, the PST file is not at risk because the PST file is not
the problem. It's the Outlook profile that's the problem. I'm sure you make
frequent backups of the PST file, anyway, right?
IMO is the only version that does not let you create a new profile. You have
2 reg hacks from with to choose. One is the one you mentioned, in which you
remove the duplicate reference to the PST file. You'll find a better
description of it here:

The other is to use a reg hack to create a new profile in IMO. Path
statements vary according to your OS. To create a new "profile" in IMO, quit
Outlook then delete this key (export first for safety if you want):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles\Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings
Restart Outlook. It will create a new profile automatically. You can then
open your existing PST and set it as the default delivery location.

You say that rarely is duplicate psts a nasty problem. As we are constantly
freezing in Outlook we thought duplicate psts is a nasty problem for us. I
have since determined that the .pst is 1.99 gb--could that be the problem (I
have previously had this problem but obviously have not learned my
lesson--unfortunately my last backup was 7/2006.) When I try to do anything
in Outlook, specifically try to delete what I can to reduce the size, I get
the message that Outlook cannot access the pst and freezes. When I
CTRL-ALT-DEL, task manager shows that there are two Outlooks open and they
both are not responding. I performed the SCANPST program which says there
are no errors in the pst.

Could I need the 2 GB Truncation Utility? I appreciate your knowledge and
advice.

Most definitely. The common problem of a duplicate or ghost PST file creates
no issues with Outlook's performance. Your problem is from having exceeded
the allowable size of your PST. Never let it get above 1.5 G. Truncate your
PST to below 1.5 G STAT.
