Duplicate Tasks

A customer of mine has an issue with duplicate tasks on 2003.

They renamed a bunch of tasks and after republishing, they now see
duplicates of these tasks in PA.

What is the best way to correct this problem?

I was thinking about completing the tasks and then deleting them but want to
do whats best for the data/actuals etc
