duplicate, triplicate and even quadruplicate email being downloaded

I am getting duplicate, triplicate and even quadruplicate email being
downloaded to Outlook 2003 from GMAIL. Why is this happening? How do I fix
this problem, so that only one copy of each email is downloaded to Outlook
2003 from GMAIL?
