Duration Calculation Issue

W

Wendy

Using a Fixed Work task, work, duration and units have been calculated
using Generic resources. Subsequently, Generic resources were replaced
with actual resources and durations changed. Both the Generic and
Actual resources utilized the same calendar and no time is listed as
non-working in either calendars. What could be the cause of the
modification of the duration calculation?

Hi Wendy,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Is there more than one resource assigned to the task?

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi Wendy,
Could you check if the Units number of each assignment is the same before
and after generic resources were replaced with actual resource?

Hope this help,

Hi Mike,

Thanks very much. Yes, there is more than one resource assigned--both
of which were generics replaced by actual resources. But for each
generic and actual resource, the calendars are identical. If this is
the case, why does the duration change?

Thanks!

Hello,

Yes, in addition to multiple resources being assigned, the units for
each resource did change.

Thanks,
Wendy

Hi Wendy,

Because you are actually changing the assignment on the task and Project
recalculates this. You've probably got effort driven set on, so removing an
assignment will extend the overall duration. Then adding another will
change it again, not necessarily to the same extent, depending upon which is
the driving resource.

You might like to have a look at my series on Microsoft Project in the
TechTrax ezine, particularly #10 on Multiple Resource Assignments, at this
site: http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc or this:

(Perhaps you'd care to rate the article before leaving the site, :)
Thanks.)

That'll do it - it'll take twice as long for a resource assigned at 50% to a
task as it would for him to do it assigned at 100% as long as the work
required and the calendars remain constant. The exact result you might get
with multiple resources will depend on the order tht you do things and
exactly how you went about it.
