Duration changes, Work changes are inconsistently

We use Project 2003 Fixed Duration - Not effort driven

When changing the duration of a task, most of the time it will update work
as expected. But too often to be a quirk, when duration is changed it will
not change work, and I can't seem to find a pattern why. Is there Project
logic for why these cases happen?

Michael,

If the task is fixed duration, and there is a resource assigned, it should
recalculate the work. It will not recalculate the work for a task without a
resource assigned because it doesn't know the units. Got resources?
