Duration more than difference between Start and end date

Hi,
I am a newbie. I was just to replicate a project from
http://www.mousetrax.com/pub/Bridge15.zip
made by MVP Mike Glen.

I have two question here.

1. The task "Surveys" has Duration 3.1 wks but the Start date is 3 Mar
and Enddate is 7 May. How can this happen? The only way i can think of
is there might be some vacation period between the two dates. If that
is the case how can i define the vacation days?

2. Also when i assign resources the difference is as below

In sample project-> Surveyors 500% 428.57h, Mike 100% 85.72h and Jane
100% 85.72h
In my project -> Surveyors 500% 428.72h, Mike 100% 120.4h and Jane 100%
120.4h

I am really not able to understand where am i doing wrong. Please help
me.

That task is spilt, you'll notice - it begins and goes for 2 weeks, then
stands down for several weeks before resuming the last week of April. When
a task is split like that, the time inside the split doesn't count for
duration because it becomes non-working time just as if the resources were
on vacation.

Hi Agarwalp,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

The Bridge project was designed by me as a vehicle to show you how to
customise Project with value lists, formulae, macros, etc., in articles 15
and then 16. I didn't expect anyone to try to recreate it!

However, the Survey task actually has a duration of 3.01 weeks and starts on
13 Mar 03 to 1 May 03. You seem to have mixed the data with the summary
task North Access. The Duration of any task is a measure of the working
time between the start and finish of the task. In the case of the survey
task, resource levelling has created a split in the task and thus the end
date is much later than originally planned, but the working time is still
3.01 weeks.

As for the resource allocation data, unless you have exactly the same
calendars created and the Tools/Options... settings are identical, you can
easily get different answers.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/>

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))

Thanks very Much

Recreating your project was to only get familiarize with MS project. I
have read all your articles and believe me they are great. Well your
response solved my first question but not the 2nd. I am still getting
mismatch hrs
I even checked the Tools->Options->Calendar and the working time, but
still the same result.

Mike i also wanted a suggestion from you. I am trying to create an
Inventory Schedule. I have the list of tasks and the
materials(equipments) required to complete the task. Is it possible to
know from the schedule the total inventory consumed (in case of works
done) and total inventory required for future tasks. This will help me
know when to order for new inventory (in future).

I hope the above makes sense and appreciate your effort to solve my
problem.

Thanks

Pradeep

I'm afraid I don't know how I arrived at the various data, as I composed it
in 1998 and I can't remember! It started off as being 3 weeks, and then I
used it for several demonstrations and made many changes en route. For the
articles I just grabbed part of the project, deleted a lot, and that was
what was left. It suited my purpose of being a vehicle for the article.
The only problem I can see is a very minor one of rounding of the decimals.
428.57 / 5 = 85.714 which is near enough the other 2 resources. Where
you're getting your figures from I can't say unless you detail every step
you are taking to achieve them.
