Duration Not Adjusted

If I assign a new calendar to a resource that contains a
work schedule that includes a 10 hour work day the
duration of the resource is not adjusted. Spicificaly, If
a task has a duration of 5 days and 40 hours of work,
using the standard calendar if the task started on the 1st
it would end on the 5th. When I assign a 50 oury a week
calendar to the resource the end date shortens but the
duration remains at 5 days. Can someone please explain why
the duration is not shortened to 4?

Hi Bill K,

Because the unit "day" is defined in Tools, Options, Calendar and probably
still stands at 8 hrs.
Whatever you do, Project makes the calculations in minutes then uses the
conversion factor(s) in Tools, Options, Calendars to convert to other units
such as day, week, month.

I think you are on the right track but there appears to be
more to this. If I adjust the day in the tools option to
cause the duration to adjust I must specify that the new
hours be set to the default. This will cause all durations
to be re-calculated instead of only the tasks assigned to
the resource cal. All of the tasks in my plan are set to
fixed units with the effort driven box checked.

The Tools Options Calendar pages sets global values that are not related to
a specific calendar, be it base or resource. Remember once again, that page
does not control ANY calendar or interact with them, although it should be
set up to be consistent with your main Project calendar. I know it seems
logical that adjusting those settings would change something in the calendar
and the name of the page makes it seem like they would, but trust us, they
don't <grin>.

I found that you have to use a wizard to readjust the work time after
a calendar change, or more specifically, you have to use the wizard to
make the calendar change.

Make sure you have the Project Guide turned on. Then click on the
button Resources. Click on the link Define Working Time For Resources.
Select a resource and click on Save and go to Step 2. Step 2 shows you
a work time calendar. You can choose a base calendar from here then
click on Save and go to Step 3. From here, you can select the days
that are affected, and you have the option to change the days and
hours per day for the resource. After making adjustments here, you can
click Save and go to Step 5 and you're done.

Hi Steve,

Right you are, but do bear in mind that this Wizard does not exist in
versions prior to 2002.
