Durations for one off calendars

I created a 24 / 7 calendar and assigned it to a task. I also created a
local resource and assigned the 24 / 7 calendar to the resource. When I am
in a gantt view and I change a task calendar from the standard calendar to
the new 24/7 calendar, the end date of the task changes as expected but the
duration stays the same. The task types are fixed units. I assumed that the
duration would follow the task calendar and not the project calendar? If the
duration follows the project calendar is there a formula i can create to show
the actual task duration based on the task calendars?

The duration is calculated using the hours per day and hours per week
settings in Tools, Options and the Calendar Tab. The calendars are only used
to calculate finish dates.

The calculation of the Duration field is based on the task's Work as well as
on the settings in Tools > Options > Calendar.

You probably have defined Hours per a day to be 8.

If you have a 3-day task using the Standard Calendar (which uses 8-hour
days), and you have one resource assigned to the task at 100% units, then the
task will have 24 hours of work. If you change the resource and task
calendars to 24-hours, then there will still be 24 hours of work, and the
duration will still show as 3 days, because your settings tell Project that
there are 8 hours in a day. You will, however, notice that the Gantt bar
will shorten to one day, indicating that the 3 days of work will be
accomplished in one (24-hour) calendar day.

If you want to havee your head not hurt so much thinking about this, you
could enter duration as elapsed days instead of days. Instead of entering
3d, for example, you could enter 3ed.
