During closing - automatic attempt to save normal.dotm

J

Jeff Lowenstein

For some reason, everytime I try to close word, it always tries to save
normal.dotm. When I click on the SAVE button, nothing happens. clicking on
cancel produces an error: The following error has occurred: 5155 This file
is read-only. I have checked for and deleted any temp files. I have also
run diagnostics, and tried a repair. Nothing so far works. There are no
permissions on the file. What do I need to do?

Thank you

Hi Jeff:
3 solutions:
1. Click "No" when asked to save normal.dot, especially if you haven't made any
changes.
2.
Do a search for normal.dot, most likely at
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Select normal.dot & press Alt+Enter. This will open the properties box & you
can uncheck "Read only". Then you should be able to save it.
2a. You can also go to Tools/Options/Save tab & uncheck "Prompt to save normal
template", after making normal.dot writable. I use the first solution & leave
normal.dot read-only, in case a virus tries making changes.

Hope this helps.
