Find the Cadopia website (www.cadopia.com I think)
download a trial version of Intellicad. Set the limits and
zoom all so that your picture is nicely positioned in the
screen, then export as a r12 asci dxf. This will work with
Word 97.

Hi George,

The MS filter used for DXF conversions was created
with AutoCad for Word v6 and supported AutoCad R12
and below format DXF files. AutoCad has not provided
a filter for the versions later than R12 and MS has retired
the present DXF filter as the result of a security review
of the converters and filters. If you're using AutoCad
you may want to try exporting as a WMF file and using
that with Word through Insert=>Picture

Hi P.J.,

I've talked with the Autodesk folks now and again over
the last several years and always get a promise that
they'll create the filter content needed for MS Office to
support the newer DXF database file format that started
with R13, but so far nothing (doesn't seem like MS has
done any followup [nudging] with them either <g>).

The filter for the R12 format may get rewritten into
managed code that would overcome the potential security
issue, but no dates have been provided. (never hurts
to use http://microsoft.com/mswish and include not just
'I want it' but what impact not having might cause.

The old one is available on the web, with a 'use at your
own risk', caveat. If you have the old .FLT file, drop
it into the folder with the others in the subfolder of
\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft shared\
then start Word and use Tools=>Options=>General to turn on
[x] Confirm Conversions at Open
and then Insert=>Picture
to register it.

Hi Bob
The wmf option really isn't very good, because Autodesk's
metafiles explode all the lines into very short bits
making editing a real pain (not ms's fault I know). Any
chance of ms getting the dxf filter sorted out? >>
