I am creating my own shapes/masters, and for the most part they are
rectangular bitmap images. I really like the dynamic grid feature and since
my shapes are rectangular I should be able to use it to lay out my shapes in
an orderly way. Unfortunately, the dynamic grid lines do not appear often
enough and consistently enough when I use these shapes I created.
Granted, I am Visio development “newbie†and I can’t find any developer
documentation on the Dynamic Grid. So I did some experimenting and found
what really seems like a bug:
1) Create a new shape master and edit it to contain a single item, a small
rectangular image inserted from a file. Use this shape on a new drawing. Even
with Dynamic Grid enabled, the dynamic grid lines appear sporadically at
best, maybe not at all.
2) Create a second shape master, just like the first one but insert the
picture from file TWICE, in exact same location (so shape looks the same but
there are two copies of the image superimposed). Now use this shape in a new
drawing and observe that the dynamic grid lines appear just as you'd want
them to and you can use them to lay out copies of this second shape in
straight line.
This seems like a bug and leaves me totally in the dark as to how to create
my own shapes that play well with the dynamic grid.
