2007 is not that far away, so let's wait and see.

Much of the fuss about OWC is really because it is implemented as ActiveX
controls. These controls have come under increased scrutiny in the recent
security wave. And the concern is legitimate. Having said this, there is a
need to service Office automation inside a web browser. Currently, only the
OWC caters to this demand. VSTO cannot and has not been designed to fill
this need (see my upcoming book professional vsto 2005).

I'd venture a guess that the folks at Microsoft are working hard to fulfill
this need in a secure way. It is not an easy task. Conservatively, I don't
expect the OWC to survive in its current implementation because the security
concerns outweigh the functional niceties. On the other hand, failure to
replace the OWC with a feasible alternative creates a void that will be
filled with open source initiatives such as Open Office. The key to this
puzzle is to examine the efforts of Office 12 due out next year.
