e-mail address fails to appear in "message recipients"

When double clicking to "select names" for the To: field in a new
Outlook message, only a period or semicolon [in the case of multiple
recipients] appears in the "message recipients" box. The same thing
happens if I try auto fill. The addresses are valid, why won't they
appear?
