e-mail addresses on web pages

D

Don Schmidt

Using Publisher 2000 to create web page.

Why are some names with linked e-mail addresses show up in the Outlook
Express "To:" box as names and some show up as e-mail addresses. i.e., John
Doe may show up as John Doe but Bill Doe shows up as (e-mail address removed)

My goal is to have the "To:" box contain the individual's name.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't this have to do with the contact
already being in your Outlook/Outlook Express Address book? Say you have
John Doe in your address book with his name and email. This email should
appear as John Doe in your To line. If the (e-mail address removed) email is NOT
in your address book, then I presume no name will appear.

I am guessing that some of your testing includes an email that is in your
address book already?

This is happening on a web site that I help out with. I'm not aware of any
address book associated with the site. I was hoping it might be a generic
formatting solution for the site is not a publisher site.

To see the problem visit http://www.osiaglnw.org/directory.cfm

Note the bottom three underscored names and the email "To:" that comes up.

Feel free to avoid this example for it's asking a bit much to visit a
foreign generated site.

Don

Don, I visited that site. I clicked on every name that had an email address
and everyone came up with (e-mail address removed). There was not any that appeared as
a name.

Now, when I add one of the names with email address to my address book on my
computer, or if I reply to an email that was sent by one of those that are
listed on the site, then I will see that the To: field will show their name.
There is no association with an address book to the website. Have you ever
received or sent an email to one of those on that list? Are any of them in
your address book?

Are we on the same page yet?

Yeap, as B.K. says, you are seeing names because your pc already has those
folks in your contacts. Other visitors won't see that.

We be on the same page.

But, Frank P.is in my address book and I send and receive email with him
yet he still comes up with (e-mail address removed).

He's the only one with a msn.com address that the name refuses to come up.

I'll live with it.

Thanks for the look.

The only one who doesn't come up is one I write to all the time. He is the
only one who has an msn.com account. ???

I'll live with it.

Thanks for the input.

To answer your question though, I am *guessing* there is a way to possibly
code a webpage so that when you click on a link that links to an email
address that you could get it to look at the hyperlink name. I am not sure
if this can be done by using forms or inserting some java script. But by
default, Publisher has no way of doing what you ask.

PS I am not sure why you are getting some inconsistencies with the names
appearing improperly. Maybe poke your head into the Outlook/Outlook Express
newsgroups?
