e-mail attachments blocked

I am unable to open some of the attachments sent to me. PDF and pictures have
opened fine. However, .doc (from Office 2003) and WordPerfect files do not
open. They are blocked and considered possible dangers. Why isn't the program
recognizing these as document files that may be opened?
