E-mail attachments in Word are full of symbols. Help!

When I open an e-mail attachment in Microsoft office word it is full of
symbols and prints that way too. Charts and graphs are totally unreadable. I
use wndows vista and have 2007 Word/Excel/powerpoint installed.

Did you save the attachment to the hard drive before opening it or open it
directly from the email? Are you sure the attachment is a Word document?

At the bottom of the page the e-mail says Microsoft office word 97-2003
document. I have opened it directly. Should I save it to the hard drive
before opening and if so how do I do THAT? ssl58.

Right-click on the attachment and choose Save As.
